About Top of the Mountain

History

Top of the Mountain was established by John & Darrelyn Orr in honor of their daughter who contracted Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in February 2008, when she was not even 20 months old. It is their daughter’s journey through the uncertainty of cancer that inspired them to open the doors of Top of the Mountain for the benefit of other families facing similar uncertainties.

Inspiration also came in the form of family members and friends who, within weeks of the Orrs' daughter's diagnosis, ran and walked marathons, and biked long distances, all to raise funds for important charities such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Lance Armstrong Foundation. Others donated gifts for charity, walked their neighborhoods to raise funds for research, and grew hair for the Locks of Love organization. Top of the Mountain was founded to address a different kind of need: the financial challenges faced by families with ill children in paying for daily necessities, including transportation costs, groceries, energy bills, air purifiers for immunosupressed children, co-payments for doctor visits and prescriptions, and countless other needs.

Today, the Orrs' daughter is doing well and, with good fortune and continued strength, she will lead a life as normal as anyone. It has been a joyous, positive outcome for one family, but there is much to be done for many other kids working toward the same goal: to reach the top of the mountain.

The organization was incorporated on January 8, 2009. By letter dated March 26, 2009, the IRS determined it to be a public charity under Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3).
